Kenner is often the first place people encounter when they arrive in Louisiana. Flights land here, rental cars are picked up here, and many visitors move straight on without realizing what the city itself offers. Spending time in Kenner, however, reveals a place shaped by deep roots, local pride, and a growing mix of culture, creativity, and revitalization.

During my visit, and while talking with Mayor Michael Glaser, it became clear that Kenner’s story is closely tied to the larger story of Jefferson Parish. Kenner serves as both a gateway and a destination within the parish, offering its own experiences while reflecting the diversity and momentum of the region it belongs to.

Kenner is part of Jefferson Parish, one of the most dynamic regions in Louisiana. The parish spans a wide geographic and cultural range, stretching from Lake Pontchartrain on the east bank all the way down to the shores of Grand Isle.

“People should visit Jefferson Parish because it’s very dynamic and has everything to do. Whatever you’re interested in, Jefferson Parish offers from the east bank of Jefferson Parish, which is by Lake Pontchartrain, all the way down to the shores of Grand Isle, where you can get any seafood you want.”— Michael J. Glaser, Mayor of Kenner

The mayor also pointed to nearby communities like Jean Lafitte and Westwego as part of that broader parish landscape, known for seafood traditions and working waterfronts. Within that context, Kenner plays a unique role. It is the international gateway to Louisiana and often a visitor’s first introduction to Jefferson Parish’s character.

Kenner has also seen continued development across the city. In Laketown, the Treasure Chest Casino has transitioned to a land-based facility, adding another entertainment option. Along Williams Boulevard, that parish-wide diversity becomes especially visible, with restaurants representing cuisines from Caribbean and Latin American communities, reflecting the area’s strong Latino presence.

The city is also focused on accessibility and ease of travel.

“Kenner is a very safe place. By this time next year, we’ll have all our major roadways redone. So traveling is going to be no trouble.”— Michael J. Glaser, Mayor of Kenner

New Things to Do In Kenner, Louisiana

1. Explore Historic Rivertown Kenner

Rivertown is the historic heart of Kenner and the oldest part of the city. Set along the Mississippi River, it once served as downtown Kenner before years of quiet left much of the area underused.

“Three years ago, this was pretty much a very desolate part of town. It’s the oldest part of the city of Kenner.”— Michael J. Glaser, Mayor of Kenner

City-led revitalization efforts opened the door for private development, allowing buildings to be restored and returned to active use. Walking through Rivertown today, the change is clear. Restaurants, museums, and small businesses line the streets, creating a walkable district where people linger rather than pass through.

“We have much more restaurants around here, a lot more foot traffic. It’s definitely on its way back to becoming a major place to hang out here in the city of Kenner.”— Michael J. Glaser, Mayor of Kenner

Much of Rivertown’s charm comes from its locally owned businesses working together. The mix of dining, shopping, and hands-on creative activities gives the district a lived-in feel that reflects both its past and its renewed energy.

Looking ahead, Rivertown is also positioned for growth. A cruise line is set to build a modern docking facility at LaSalle Landing, at the foot of Rivertown, a project expected to bring increased foot traffic and introduce new visitors to the area before they head elsewhere.

2. Visit the Kenner Planetarium and Science Center

Kenner’s cultural offerings extend beyond its riverfront. One of the city’s standout attractions is the Kenner Planetarium and Science Center, which adds an element of discovery to a visit.

History in Rivertown feels personal, and the Clancy House is a clear example of that connection. Once a family home, it now stands as a restored event venue.

Today, the Clancy House has been carefully restored, preserving its legacy while giving it a new purpose. It reflects the broader approach Kenner has taken, honoring its past while keeping historic places active and relevant.

A visit to Kenner naturally includes time to slow down and enjoy something local. Debbie on the Levee offers exactly that. Located near the river, this modern diner and café is known for its desserts, particularly its Doberge cake.

Experiencing Kenner Within Jefferson Parish

Kenner, does not try to stand apart from Jefferson Parish. Instead, it reflects the parish’s diversity and momentum in its own way. From Rivertown’s revitalized streets to cultural institutions, creative spaces, neighborhood restaurants, and major developments on the horizon, the city offers a thoughtful introduction to the region.

With plans underway for a new cruise docking facility and a 15,000-seat amphitheater on Lake Pontchartrain, Kenner continues to position itself as a place where visitors arrive, stay, and explore.

Kenner is no longer just where a Louisiana trip begins. It is a destination within Jefferson Parish that rewards time, curiosity, and attention.
